The iconic Lambretta nameplate is all set to make its re-entry into Indian two-wheeler market. The scooter maker has officially confirmed that it will unveil the Lambretta Electric prototype at the 15th edition of Delhi Auto Expo, which will be held from 6-9 February 2020. This is in-line with the brand's plans to revive itself in the highly competitive and growing Indian auto industry.
The Lambretta Electric prototype will be developed in Milan, Italy. The company hasn't revealed the specifications and details of the upcoming electric vehicle. Lambretta has tied up with Noida-based Lohia Auto and New Delhi headquartered Bird Group for the development of the EV technology.
Lambretta International has also announced that the company has been developing the steel-bodied Super Lambretta. This scooter will be tailor-made for the Indian market. Moreover, the upcoming scooter will be bigger than any of its previous scooters. It will have a retro-look and will carry an upmarket feel, and will be launched as a premium offering. The company said that the new Lambretta scooter for "specially developed for ambitious young people understanding the beauty of Italian design."
The Lambretta Electric and the Super Lambretta scooters will be developed at a new assembly plant in the Mumbai area. The new facility in India will also serve as a production hub for African and other Asian markets. The parent company, Innocenti is banking on the Lambretta's iconic image among Indian buyers to achieve a success in the highly competitive market.
The Government of India's push for electric vehicles is one of the reasons behind the Lambretta's comeback in India with an electric two-wheeler. Most of the two-wheeler brands are already working on battery-powered 2-wheelers for the Indian market. At the Auto Expo 2018, Vespa showcased the Elettica e-scooter that shares platform with the VX range.
