It seems that Bentley’s Bentayga is quickly becoming a benchmark in the luxury SUV segment as many of its competitors have already started development of models to match the high-riding vehicle from Crewe. Tata Motors-owned Land Rover is one of the first to announce a rivaling model is in the works and it will obviously be based on the Range Rover.
The model will be positioned above the current flagship SVAutobiography long wheelbase which at home in United Kingdom begins at a rather hefty £156,000. As for the new version, its name is not known at this point but we can tell you that it will carry an estimated starting price of £200,000, so it will be interesting to see what new luxurious amenities Land Rover will be able to add to justify the significant price hike.
Speaking to British magazine Auto Express, Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations managing director John Edwards admitted the model in question could reach the £200,000 mark and he went on to describe it as the “ultimate Range Rover.” The higher-end British luxury SUV is expected to get even more customization options, more tailored options for the interior cabin along with exclusive paint schemes that won’t be offered on any other model.
If everything goes according to plan, the new flagship Range Rover by SVO will be out sometime next year and it will likely be a regular production model rather than a limited-run special edition. It will have to face some stiff competition not just from the aforementioned Bentley Bentayga, but also from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan due late 2018 while Mercedes-Maybach could also launch a more luxurious derivative of the GLS featuring a longer wheelbase.
Maybe other automakers will join the very high-end SUV game as there is a market for such prestige vehicles which for many people are nothing more than status symbols to show off wealth and power.
