Ever since the government revealed its plans to mass shift to electric vehicles by 2030, EVs have been in limelight, with carmakers chalking out a plan and forming collaborations to foray into the otherwise neglected segment in the Indian market. In tandem with the government’s vision to embrace electric mobility, Maharashtra, a prominent state in the West India, has come forward to support the Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme.

With this, Maharashtra becomes the first state in India to incentivise electric vehicles. Maharashtra is a large state in India and to begin with, the scheme will be first introduced in prominent cities including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Thane and Nashik. This would, in turn encourage buyers to opt electric vehicles over the traditional petrol/diesel driver vehicles. That said, the government of Maharashtra has exempted EVs from road tax and registration fees, and it will also give a maximum grant of 15 per cent of the EV’s cost to the last owner at the end of the vehicle’s life-span.

In addition to this, the government will also give 25 per cent subsidy, which will approximately amount to Rs 10 lakh on the first 20 charging stations to be built in the state. Interestingly, the State government has allowed the EV makers to install charging points at the fuel stations, provided they receive a clearance and abide by the safety norms. Under the scheme, the Maharashtra government will levy non-commercial electricity rates on these charging stations.
