Mahindra will upgrade its popular SUV, Bolero to abide by the upcoming safety and emission norms set to implement from April 1, 2020. Bolero, despite its 19-year long run, enjoys a high demand among customers, hence the upgrade makes sense. That said, the entire range of Bolero will get an anti-lock-braking system from this month. Other mandatory safety features such as driver side airbag, speed warning, rear parking sensors and seatbelt reminder will be equipped in Bolero before July 2019. Following this, a major safety upgrade will be given to meet the front and side crash standards before October 1, 2019.

Another safety standard that will be mandated for all cars effective April 1, 2020, is the pedestrian crash regulation. Mahindra will tweak the front end of Bolero in order to fit a higher bonnet. Aside from a high-set bonnet, the front will also feature a soft bumper and a redesigned grille, which will help reduce pedestrian injuries in case of an accident. Even though the deadline for all the aforementioned safety standards varies, the Bolero facelift is expected to receive all of these upgrades.

Another major change that is on cards is the updated engine which will be calibrated to adhere by the cleaner BS-VI emission norms, set to implement from April 1, 2020. Bolero will continue to derive power from the 2.5-litre m2Di engine that will be updated in tandem with the BSVI standards. This would help Mahindra keep Bolero’s price within the competitive limit.

While the current engine will be upgraded to comply with the BS VI emission norms, the possibility of Bolero getting a mHawk engine in future seems unlikely. Despite 19 long years, Bolero shows no signs of fading away amid new models. It roped in around 80,000 unit sales alone in 2018 which reflects its popularity among customers.
