Mahindra and Ford have joined hands to develop electric vehicle technology together. Now the two auto majors will also develop two new SUVs jointly, while one of them will be a midsize one, the other model will be a compact SUV. Under this strategy, Mahindra’s next-generation XUV500 could share the underpinning of a Ford SUV. However, the name of this compact SUV is yet to be revealed by any of these two companies.
Apart from the above-mentioned SUVs, both the companies are also preparing to develop an electric model. Mahindra and Ford have signed MoU to share electric powertrains and connected car technologies as well. Under this partnership, Ford is gearing up to launch an electric powered Aspire compact sedan that will use Mahindra’s electric powertrain.
Mahindra has already earned respect with its affordable electric powertrains that are being used in the models like e2o Plus, e-Verito. The homegrown automaker is also preparing to launch an electric variant of the KUV100 NXT. An electric powered XUV500 is also on the card. On the other hand, looking at the growth potential of the Indian EV market, Ford is aiming to grab a significant chunk of the pie and the Ford Aspire EV could play a key role in that strategy.
In this scenario, both Mahindra and Ford are aiming to use the synergies of their partnership for mutual growth in the highly competitive Indian market. Under this partnership, Mahindra is expected to be benefitted from Ford’s world-class connected car technologies, while the American auto giant will be able to make its cars more affordable thanks to Mahindra’s tried and tested cheaper platforms and EV technology.
