Mahindra and Mahindra are fast becoming a name to reckon with in the car manufacturing scene in India. They have already established a place in the car sector and have raced ahead to take the second place for the manufacture of commercial vehicles as well. It is a well known fact that recently the Indian scenario is not very good for the manufacture of commercial vehicles, particularly for trucks. Sales of heavy trucks as well as medium level trucks have gone down. On the other hand the sale of “pick ups” have gone up.
The data given below shows the sales figures of both Mahindra and Mahindra and Ashok Leyland, the other contenders for the second place:
Mahindra and Mahindra : “165588” vehicles
Ashok Leyland : “100592” commercial vehicles
The number given above excludes vehicles exported and it also does not take into account the sale of “Dosti” vehicles of Ashok Leland which are sold under the brand of JV Products. If “Dosti” sale is taken into account the second position belongs to Ashok Leyland because the sales of this vehicle were 30592 during April 2012 to February 12013.
It is a common knowledge that the sales of both heavy and medium vehicles has gone done very badly in India. However, Mahindra and Mahindra has sold more commercial pick ups then any other group and based on this fact they are now claiming the second place. A spokesperson from Mahindra and Mahindra said that they planned to unveil new products in all sectors because the fall back in the sale of commercial vehicles is temporary, He hopes the sale of their commercial vehicles would improve further. On the other hand, Ashok Leyland’s spokesman says that they would be putting more commercial vehicles on the roads and that they would be working with both “JV and “Nissan Motor Company” .
It would be interesting in the future to watch these two giants race neck to neck for the second place in the commercial vehicle manufacturing scene in India. Both the customers for commercial vehicles and general public would be watching this race with interest.
