Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown auto-major, is all set to launch an all-new compact SUV (codenamed S101) in 2015 in the country. The aforesaid SUV with camouflage, lesser than 4-meters in length, was spotted near company's R&D centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Alongside S101 compact SUV, Mahindra would also launch the Bolero replacement (codenamed U301) next year and it, too, has been spotted as a test mule quite a few times, albeit with disguise.
Mahindra is said to be giving the S101 compact SUV a crossover-esque shape to challenge the likes of mid-sized hatchbacks such as the Hyundai Elite i20, Toyota Etios Cross and Ford EcoSport. Being based on a monocoque structure, it would be the most compact vehicle in Mahindra's stable. It is the second vehicle after flagship XUV 500 to be underpinning the aforementioned structure. Inside the cabin, the gear-level is placed on the centre console, while the vehicle boasts bench-type seats at the front. And, with the launch of S101, the company would have three sub 4-meter SUVs in its portfolio.
Talking about the engine and transmission of S101, it is being widely speculated that it would in-house a set of newly developed 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The engines would be lesser than 1200cc, and could be offered with an AMT kit. Though, Mahindra would debut the AMT gearbox with the Quanto next year. It is expected that the Mahindra S101 compact SUV would be launched in the price bracket of Rs. 5-7 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom) in and around the second half of 2015.
