Mahindra & Mahindra, the leading UV maker had launched 2 all-new UVs - Marazzo MPV and Alturas G4 7-seater premium SUV in 2018. The company is now gearing up for the launch of the long-awaited sub-4 meter SUV - codenamed S201. The SUV is scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of 2019. Mahindra will officially announce the market name of the S201 compact SUV on December 19, 2018. The name announcement event was earlier scheduled on December 1, but was postponed due to undisclosed reasons.
If speculations are to be believed, the small SUV could be called Mahindra XUV300. This will be in-line with the brand's most popular and larger XUV500. Both the models are built on monocoque construction, though S201 will use the SsangYong's X100 platform that also underpins the Tivoli. Rumours also suggest that the S201 compact SUV could be called Mahindra Inferno.
The Mahindra S201 compact SUV has been spotted multiple times on Indian roads. The SUV will challenge the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. It is also expected that Mahindra is working on a 7-seater SUV based on the same X100 platform. This model will sit above the 4 meter in length and will take on the likes of Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier and the Nissan Kicks.
The production-spec model will be equipped with several segment-leading and advanced features. The SUV will come with a factory-fitted sunroof, leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a large touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Navigation support and cruise control. The top-spec model will be equipped with projector headlamps with daytime running lights and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The SUV will come equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, rear parking sensors and four-wheel disc brakes as standard. The top-spec model will also receive electronic stability program (ESP), hill launch assist, reverse parking camera and many segment-best features. The Mahindra S201 is also expected to be the most powerful SUV in its category. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that also powers the Marazzo. This engine is capable of producing 123bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. With this SUV, Mahindra will also debut the new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine which can produce up to 135PS of power. Both manual and automatic versions of the SUV could be on offer.
