Mahindra & Mahindra is basking high in the glory of next-gen Scorpio, which it launched a couple of months back in the country. Now, the company is eyeing an automatic variant of the SUV as well, owing to the fact that the preceding model used to feature the same. New Scorpio with AT has been caught a couple of times on Indian roads as test mule and it is an indication that it is due for launch anytime sooner, most probably in Q1 2015.
The Scorpio facelift wouldn't be featuring an automated manual transmission (AMT) unit, instead it will boast a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Mahindra-owned Ssangyong has developed this 6-speed automatic unit for its X100 compact SUV. Furthermore, Ssangyong's president has also confirmed the same by stating that Mahindra is certainly contemplating this gearbox for the flagship SUV XUV500. But, since XUV500 and Scorpio share the same engine, hence the aforesaid gearbox might make its way in the Scorpio as well. However, nothing is concrete yet, as Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra has concluded that the company would launch the AT model based on the public demand and buyers' interest.
New Mahindra Scorpio had a thunderous start upon its arrival as it bagged as many as 12,000 pre-orders within no time. The company has offered it in six variants - S2, S4, S6, S6+, S8, and S10 - of whom, S4 and S10 trims are also available with a made-to-order basis All-Wheel-Drive (4X4) system. Except for the entry-level S2 grade, which comes with a .5-liter m2DiCr engine, all the remaining variants of the Scorpio come loaded with a 2.2L, 4-cylinder, mHawk engine. The home-grown automajor is also planning to launch an AMT variant of its compact MPV Quanto in 2015.
