Mahindra & Mahindra’s flagship, Scorpio SUV has once again re-claimed the title of the best selling car in its class in the financial year 2013-14, leaving behind the likes of Renault Duster SUV and the Ford EcoSport. The Indian automaker sold a total number of 50,900 units of the Scorpio in the fiscal 2013-14, while Renault Duster clocked in sales of 46,700 units and Ford’s EcoSport contributed through sales of 45,000 units.
The surge in sales of the Scorpio SUV can be largely attributed to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as the model is quite popular among political parties. Also, Mahindra posted its highest-ever monthly sales of Scorpio in March 2014 at 5,605 units led by the festive buying of Gudi Padva in Maharashtra and Navratras in the North.
"We have posted highest-ever sales of Scorpio and Bolero in March and these are not merely strong dispatch numbers; they are backed by strong retail buying. We operate on a pull basis and not push basis," said Pravin Shah, chief executive, Automotive, Mahindra & Mahindra.
Last year, it was the hugely successful Renault Duster SUV that took the top honours in the SUV segment with total sales of 51,400 units, while the Scorpio registered 49,500. This year however, the French automaker had no such luck, even though it was a close race among the two. The edge that Mahindra enjoys over the French automaker is the strong brand presence in rural areas and a large chain of distribution and service network throughout the country.
