Dr Pawan Goenka, the MD of Mahindra, has earlier confirmed that two electric cars from the Indian automaker are to be launched in the upcoming years. The name of the vehicles are yet to be disclosed but they are likely to be from Mahindra’s existing models of SUVs.
With the Indian government’s initiation towards adopting electric vehicles by 2030, the auto manufacturing companies are gearing up to bringing in more electric vehicles to match the market’s needs and lead the competition. Mahindra has planned an investment Rs 4,000 crore in the coming years for developing EVs, out of which, the company has already invested around Rs 500 crore.
Mahindra targets to produce more than 50,000 units of EVs yearly in the coming years. Besides, the company is also searching for partners for a joint venture in motor and power electronics to get the support from them during the new launches.
Presently, Mahindra sells three EVs in the country- the eVerito sedan, the E2o Plus hatchback and Supro Electric. These electric cars are highly priced if compared to the conventional petrol and diesel cars, making them poor sellers.
The E2O Plus can go 140 kms per charge. There is also an upgraded version of the Mahindra eVerito that is able to go 135 kms per charge, while the market demands a battery range of 300 kms for a feasible adaptation. Now, it is to be seen whether the automaker manages to achieve something similar with the electric version of Scorpio.
