India's leading SUV maker, Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to launch a new price cut version of its flagship SUV XUV500 to counter balance the loss it had to face after the Finance Ministry's decision of increasing the excise duty on SUVs in the 2013 Union Budget. Other than the increased duties, the entry of several affordable SUVs in the segment, especially the Duster has hampered the sales of the car.
Now when the Nissan Terrano is already there, the competition is likely to go up considerably. The company which was selling about 3,500 units/month of the XUV500 earlier is now managing to sell around 2,000 units a month. So, a more affordable version of the hugely popular XUV500, seems a plan going in favour of Mahindra.
To be called as the XUV 500 W4, the new base variant will miss out on several features, so to be able to come at a competitive price tag. The company hasn't given any hints at the pricing; however, we believe it to be priced as low as Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) as against Rs 12.02 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the W6 variant.
The features that the XUV500 W4 is likely to be missing out are 6-inch touch-screen infotainment display, tyre pressure sensor, DVD player, rain sensing wipers, parking assistance system, light sensing headlamps, ESP, hill hold and hill descent control, front fog lamps, twin exhaust tips, telescoping steering, power-folding side mirrors, premium fabric upholstery, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, camping lamps, puddle lamps, door ajar lamps and illuminated key ring.
Despite losing all the above mentioned features, the XUV500 W4 bags a bunch of exciting features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Projection headlamps with LED parking lights, integrated music system with CD/MP3, 4 door speakers, roof rails, twin-pod instrument cluster, tilt power steering, jaquard fabric upholstery, power adjustable ORVMs, height adjustable front row seat belts, 6-way adjustable driver's seat, follow-me home headlamps, flat foldable second and third row seats etc.
Mechanically, the Mahindra XUV500 W4 carries the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with 5th Generation Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) that mated to a six-speed transmission, churns out the maximum power output of 140bhp and 330Nm of peak torque.
The company hasn't yet announced the launch date of the car, but we expect it to be coming by the end of this month. We will bring you the detailed price and feature list of the car, once it is launched. Stay tuned to Autoportal.
