After a tough 2017 season, Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda team rider, has clinched the championship winning 1st position after the thrilling Valencia GP yesterday.
Marquez scored 3rd position at the last race of the season and won the championship with an overall lead of 37 points from his closest competitor Andrea Dovizioso. Dovizioso failed to complete the race after battling with his teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, and going wide on a corner with six laps remaining. The final race of the season was won by Dani Pedrosa, team Repsol Honda, as he overtook the race leader Johann Zarco in the last lap for the 1st position.
Marquez started strong with pole position and battled the race leader Johann Zarco, until he went wide while overtaking the French, Marquez almost survived the crash and remained in the race to finish at a final 3rd position.
“During the race, I was trying to be calm and control the situation, but then I thought now it is time to push because I felt really good,” said a buoyant Marquez, who defied 27 crashes during the course of the season to win the title.
“In turn one I lost concentration on the braking point, I broke too late and you know (it was) Marquez-style until the end.”
