Maruti Suzuki has finally launched the Baleno RS at a sticker price of Rs. 8.69 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi) in the country. It is the high-performance version of the hatchback, which debuts the Boosterjet petrol engine in the Indian market. Being based on the fully-loaded Alpha trim of the regular hatchback, it would be retailed via the NEXA chain of premium outlets. The bookings for the Baleno RS started on February 17, 2017 at a token amount of Rs. 11,000 across all the NEXA dealerships. The company has made a few cosmetic changes in the hatch to differentiate it from the standard variants of Baleno.
Maruti Baleno RS is identical to the regular Baleno in terms of dimensions. As far as cosmetic updates are concerned, it comes with sporty front and rear bumpers and grille coupled with front, rear and side under body spoilers, while riding on black-colored alloy wheels. The performance-oriented hatchback also gets RS badging at the rear. Inside the cabin, it gets all the features and equipments that are on offer with Alpha variant of standard Baleno hatch. As for safety features, it would boast of ISOFIX Child seat anchorages, Dual airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as standard. Weighing merely 950 kgs, it gets disc brakes at the front as well as rear. As of now, Maruti has sold over 1.50 Lakh units of the standard Baleno in the Indian market.
Under the bonnet, the Baleno RS has the 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged Boosterjet engine, which develops maximum power output of 100bhp at 5500rpm and peak torque performance of 150Nm between 1700-4500rpm. Though, it is nearly 11bhp less than the international models. The engine is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission, while it returns an exceptional mileage of 21.1kmpl (ARAI Specified). For all those asking, 'RS' stands out for Road Sports as per the folks at Maruti. The Baleno RS hatchback would compete with the likes of Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and Fiat Abarth Punto in the country. Just so you know, Maruti Baleno RS has cleared the clear frontal offset impact, side impact and pedestrian safety compliance in India.
