Maruti Suzuki has showcased a sportier version of the Celerio hatchback at the 2016 Auto Expo. Maruti Celerio's sportier version hints that the company could foary into the pseudo-crossover segment in near future and join the likes of Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and Hyundai i20 Active. Just so you know, Maruti Celerio was launched at the 2014 Auto Expo in the country.
The sportier avatar of Celerio made its first public appearance at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. It recevied a positive reception from the auto enthusiasts and hence, the company has showcased it again at the Auto Expo in India. The Celerio's sportier version comes with a body kit, matte-finish grille, black body cladding on the side skirts, rear roof spoiler, and twin 6-spoke alloy wheels. In addition, it also has black outside rear view mirrors against the body-coloured mirrors, which are on offer with the standard model. The interior cabin has contrast red inserts and stitching on the seat and steering wheel.
Mechanically, Maruti Celerio Cross is powered by the same 1.0L petrol powerplant which develops 49bhp of top power at 6000rpm and 90Nm of peak torque at 3500rpm. The power output and torque performance seem to be quite low, if it is being seen from a pseudo-crossover's point of view. Maruti might re-tune the engine to extract 10-20bhp of extra power for the cross version, if the company finally zeroes down on its launch. It would be offered with the conventional 5-speed manual transmission and, don't get surprised, if Maruti also launches the AMT variant at some later stage.
