There's been immense hullabaloo regarding Maruti Suzuki's compact SUV, expected to rival the Ford EcoSport, for quite some time now. And, now the folks at AutoCar India have been successful in capturing the almost production ready version of the camouflaged compact SUV. Being codenamed as YBA, it is heavily based on the Suzuki iV-4 concept SUV which was unveiled at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Going by the lone spy-shot that we have, it seems as Maruti has been successful in keeping the length of this compact SUV under 4-meters. It appears as if it too would mount a spare wheel at the tail gate, similar to the EcoSport. Although, the compact SUV spied in the pic doesn't have any tail-gate mounted spare wheel. The compact SUV looks rugged and muscular as far as exterior styling is concerned. As mentioned before, it draw its looks heavily from the iV-4 concept SUV; but, a lot of chaps would contradict it as Maruti Suzuki has already wheeled out the new and much larger Vitara SUV based on the iV-4 Concept SUV. But again, the YBA is also based on this concept and is a more compact version.
The compact SUV retains tapering window line, angular tail-lamps and the ‘open-mouthed’ lower air dam from the iV-4 Concept. However, some elements have been downgraded such as the front grille which comprises of horizontal slats instead of the vertical ones, as seen in the Concept SUV. The wheel arches don’t have excessive cladding, the windscreen is steeply raked back and, thanks to a floating C-pillar, the glasshouse gets a cockpit-like look. In all, the compact SUV looks sporty, muscular and menacing. As for the engines, it would use company's existing range of powertrains and might borrow them from Ciaz sedan. It is expected that Maruti would unveil the production version of this compact SUV at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo and it might be christened as Maruti iV4.
