Maruti sales decline 11.4 per cent in April 2014

Snapshot: Maruti sold a total of 86,196 units in April 2014

As a new month starts, automakers start announcing their sales figures for the previous month, and the first statistics we got today are from the country's own automaker, Maruti Suzuki. The company has reported a decline of 11.4 per cent in its total sales in April with sales of 86,196 units against 97,302 units sold in the same month last year. Exports rose 4.4 per cent last month to 7,077 units from 6,739 units last year but domestic sales of the company fell down to 79,119 cars from 90,523 units in April 2013, a decline of 12.1 per cent.

Maruti has been India's largest selling auto brand whose major chunk of sales comes from entry-level cars. Although last month the company recorded a decline of 25.4 per cent in sales of its mini segment cars including the Alto 800, the Alto K10, A-Star and WagonR dropped to 26,043 units as compared to 34,927 units in the same period last year. Sales of mid-size hatchbacks including Swift, Estilo and Ritz increased to 23,569 units from 21,535 units in April of previous year.

The launch of Amaze and Hyundai Xcent has affected the Dzire sales drastically, and it fell down by 17.7 per cent to 16,008 units as against 19,446 units while the SX4 managed to garner only 76 units as against 601 units during the same month last year. The Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga totally sold 5011 units as against 5,318 cars in the same period last year. Sales of vans Omni and Eeco declined 4.3 per cent to 8,322 units in April this year from 8,696 units in the corresponding period, last year.
