Maruti Suzuki has sold 10,000 units of Baleno hatch in May 2016 in the country. The premium hatchback has outsold its arch rival - the Hyundai i20 - for the second consecutive month as the i20 managed sales of 8469 units in May 2016. In addition, Maruti sold 7200 units of Vitara Brezza in May, while Ciaz outnumbered the City sedan with sales of 5188 units against 3300 units. Though, the only disappointment for the company was S-Cross, which just managed 2101 units in May 2016.

RS Kalsi, executive director of sales and marketing at Maruti, said the company's target is to attain leadership in the premium category. "We have emerged leaders in the premium sedan segment and target to achieve leadership in the premium compact segment soon," he said. Maruti Baleno and S-Cross are sold via Maruti's premium NEXA outlets, while the Vitara Brezza is retailed through the company's regular showrooms. Hyundai Elite i20 is a bit pricier than Maruti Baleno, and it also lacks bells and whistles as the Baleno. However, Hyundai Motor India's senior vice president for sales and marketing, Rakesh Srivastava, said the company's products held the leadership position despite threats from lower-priced rival models. "Hyundai continues to build its brand equity with its premium positioning and by investing in new-generation style, quality and unique features," he said.

It is also being learnt that Maruti has sold over 20,000 units of Vitara Brezza since the launch in March 2016. And, still the deliveries of 45,000 more are underway. The company is leaving no stones unturned to ramp up the production and cut down the waiting period, which has gone upto 9-10 months for certain variants. As for Baleno, it has a general waiting period 3-4 months in the country as Maruti has also commenced exports of the hatch to several international markets, including Japan. The country's largest automaker would launch the Ignis micro-SUV and Baleno RS during the festive season this year in India to further extend its portfolio. Both the aforementioned vehicles were showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo in February.
