Maruti has developed an all new 800cc, small capacity diesel engine which will be used in the Celerio and an all new mini-commercial vehicle. The Celerio was launched by Maruti, in February last year and there is no option of a diesel engine right now. At present, the compact car sells on an average of 5,000 units per months and 40% of the sales are accounted by the automatic variant.
The other diesel engine that Maruti uses is a 1,300 cc engine that it manufactures under license from Fiat. For Maruti, the engine might be the game changer since there is no other car that uses such small capacity diesel engine. The engine would be extremely fuel efficient and should deliver a mileage close to 30kmpl. Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki has confirmed and said "Yes, it will soon do duty on our cars."
The company has already started the production and aims at producing one lakh units annually. There are plans to utilize the same engine on other small cars as well.
The commercial vehicle that will compete against the likes of Tata Ace etc. will also be introduced this year. The company executives are hopeful that the highly fuel-efficient engine with a low-maintenance cost would be able to attract lot of buyers.
