Originally introduced in the country back in the year 2000, Maruti Suzuki’s ridiculously popular small car, the Alto brand has crossed the cumulative 25 lakh sales mark in India. The small car has achieved this commendable feat in just 14 years - that is fastest by any model in India. Furthermore, by achieving the 25 lakh sales mark, Alto has now officially joined the league of 25 lakh club, which until now was recognised by only one other model - the iconic Maruti 800.
Commenting on the feat, Mr Manohar Bhat, vice president of marketing said, “We are humbled by the Alto’s popularity. Alto continues to be India’s favourite car thanks to its value proposition and low cost of ownership. We thank are our patrons for recognising this and supporting Alto to make it a powerful brand in the automobile industry.”
Back in 2010, which is after 10 successful years of the Alto, Maruti Suzuki introduced the 1000cc version of the iconic Alto called the Alto K10 that also rose to fame in the Indian market, registering sales of more than 4 lakh cars in less than 4 years. Then came 2012, and we saw the all-new avatar of the Alto in the form of Alto 800. This particular model went on to clocking sales of 1,00,000 units within just 124 days of its launch. Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki claims to have exported over 2.85 lakh units of the Alto to a number of countries.
Over the years, no matter how many more small cars have entered the market in India, the Alto has successfully managed to create a significant market share, which we reckon will stay that way for many more decades to come.
