And Maruti has achieved yet another milestone! Maruti Alto 800, which is single-handedly the largest selling car in India for past few years, has been chosen as the world's best selling small car in 2014. Maruti Alto surged passed Volkswagen Golf, Daihatsu Tanto, Toyota Aqua and Honda Fit, to take the lead globally.
First launched some 14 years ago, Maruti Alto toppled the sales of Maruti 800 initially, before becoming the best selling car in India. Maruti Alto achieved the sales figures of 264,544 units last year in the local market, at an average of 20000 vehicles per month. Volkswagen Golf of Germany did 255,044 units in 2014, Daihatsu Tanto did 234,456 units, Toyota Aqua 233,209 units and the Honda Fit came fifth with 202,838 units.
Maruti Alto was in top 3 for last four years, but couldn't make it to number 1 for straight 3 years. While it may be the largest selling car in the world, Alto's performance has declined in 2014 from the 300000 strong sales it achieved in 2011. Strangely, no car from Brazil could make its way to the list, the world's largest small car market. Volkswagen Gol, its best selling car for 25 years, wasn't able to cross the 2 lakh units mark.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is available in four versions in India: Base, VX, LX, and LXi in a price range of Rs 2.38 lakh – Rs 3.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
