The battle in the compact car segment is heating up, with India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India all set to bring in a brand new model in 2014 against Hyundai's all new Grand i10. This new model is basically a replacement for the Maruti A-Star and Estilo, which failed to fulfill the company's expectation. According to our trusted sources, the A-Star replacement will debut at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo.
To be positioned below the Swift, new model from Maruti is expected to be made available both in the petrol and diesel engine options. While the petrol model will retain the existing 1.0-litre K-Series engine, the diesel engine could be a new 2-cylinder 800cc turborcharged mill, on which MSI has been working for so long.
There is not much hidden about the design of the new model, since it has been caught testing several times. The A-Star (Known as Suzuki Alto in Japan) replacement looks to be larger than the existing A-Star and will have better features and interiors. So, A-Star which is a small car will be the new tall boy from the company with more space inside the cabin.
The company which has already axed the Estilo in the Indian market surely needs a good product to compete against the Hyundai Grand i10, which has garnered a great opening response from the Indian market. Therefore, this could be Maruti's answer to Hyundai. There are also rumours claiming the new model to be replacing the Ritz, but we doubt on that. And if it happens, we expect the A-Star replacement to come in two model series/line-up, as is the case with Hyundai i10 and Grand i10, where one will have 1.0-litre K-Series petrol & new 800cc diesel mill, other will have the existing 1.2-litre petrol & 1.3-litre multijet diesel engine.
