Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce a new 6-speed gearbox that will give the brand a major boost this year. Codenamed MF30, the 6-speed transmission will smooth the overall driving performance of Maruti’s products, where the Maruti car’s currently make use of a 5-speed greabox starting from its entry level hatchback Alto to mid-size sedan Ciaz.

As per an industry source, “Maruti is looking to shore up the use of six-speed transmissions in a gradual way. Starting with 50,000 units in the first year the demand is projected to go to 400,000 units per year by 2020.”

First car to fall under the 6-speed transmission programme is likely to be the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback. Adding another gear in the setup further enhances fuel efficiency. With a better spacing of gears you can drive the vehicle at a higher speed at lower RPMs, thereby giving better fuel efficiency. Though, this is not the first time that Maruti Suzuki is introducing this technology. The previous generation S-Cross with 1.6 litre diesel engine had the same gearbox. However, that generation of the model phased out and with the launch of the new model with the 1.3 litre diesel engine mated to a five-speed gearbox, terminating the use of the six-speed gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki is not the only one to offer a 6-speed transmission system, in fact its direct rival, Hyundai has been employing 6-speed gearbox in models like Elite i20, Verna, Elantra, Creta and Tucson. Tata motors too induced the Nexon, which is a direct rival to Maruti Vitara Brezza with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Soon enough the company will launch a 6-speed automatic version as well. Tata Hexa and Safari Storme also employs a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Similarly, Renault sells three of its models with 6-speed transmissions - Lodgy, Duster and Captur.
