Suresh Rana, who has won the raid de Himalaya Rally, has also won the “Desert Storm” sponsored by Maruti Suzuki. 11th round of the Desert Storm, a very tough and challenging rally started from Delhi, 18th February finished in Jaipur. 138 teams took part in the rally. The breakup of teams is as follows:
- Xtreme had 52
- Endure had 34
- Xplore had 29
- Motor had 29
- Quad had 3 three
Two hundred and sixty three individuals, expert in taking part in tough rallies, came from all over world to take part in this rally.
The rally covered 2.200 kms. Covering all types of different and wild terrain. The track was grueling and tested the drivers and machines. Machines and drivers had to face the harsh conditions and only 25 per cent drivers in each category finished the rally.
Rana was driving a Vitra which was especially prepared for the Desert Strom; out of 13 he won 12 stages on his route to victory. Rally Xtreme, Rally Xplore, Rally Noclure. 29 mts. 33 seconds before his nearest rival to the title. Sunny Sidhu was driving Mahindra XUV 500.
Raina topped most Rally Xtreme, event at high speed. Through out the rally he had maintained top position, winning nearly 12 out of 13 stages. He lost 14 mts. Because he had some minor accident. He decided to work harder not to lose single mts. He managed to increase till last stage. With Rana 29.33 mtrs ahead, Sidhu came second in Rally Xtreme ahead from Lohit Urs of Mysore. Maruti dominated the race where reputed foreign brands were also taking part. 70% prizes in all categories were won by Maruti.
Mohit Verma came first in Xtreme Moto 27 sec. over Vijay Parmar who had unfortunately had a fall in the last stage. A German biker Stephan Rausche came third. He lost time at the beginning of the race.
The management of Maruti announced that they are pleased that youth of the country is taking part in these rallies. He said the rally was a testing ground of their new models before they are introduced to the public.
