India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd have reported a 19.2 per cent increase in total sales at 1,00,925 units in the month of May 2014. The automaker had clocked total sales of 84,677 units in the same month last year.
In terms of domestic market alone, the automaker registered sales of 90,560 units, which translates to a healthy growth of 16.4 per cent, when compared to 77,821 units sold in May 2013. The growth in sales has been attributed to the range of Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks comprising of the Swift, Estilo and the Ritz, which showed a 53.9 per cent increase in sales at 26,394 units this May, as compared to 17,147 units last year.
Maruti Suzuki’s range of mini segment cars such as Maruti 800, Alto, A-Star and the Wagon R however, projected a decline in sales by 7.5 per cent to 29,068 units as compared to 31,427 units sold in the year ago period. The sales of mid-sized sedan SX4 too, dropped by 75.9 per cent to 121 units as against 503 units in the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki Kizashi on the other hand, didn’t register a single sale.
Maruti Suzuki’s utility vehicles, which includes Gypsy, Grand Vitara and the Ertiga MPV saw a rise in sales by 22 per cent to 5,253 units in May this year from 4,307 units in the corresponding month last year. Sales of the vans - Omni and Eeco - increased 50.2 per cent to 10,771 units in May 2014 as compared to 7,172 units sold in May 2013.
Lastly, the Indian automaker shipped out 10,365 units to its international markets, which translates to a growth of 51.2 per cent, as against 6,856 units exported in May 2013.
