  • The current 1.3L diesel engine of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will be discontinued.

  • It is not certain if the SUV will receive cosmetic tweaks.

  • A 4-speed auto box will be added later.

Maruti Suzuki India is expected to add a petrol engine to its popular subcompact SUV, Vitara Brezza. The model, which is currently available with a single diesel engine is feeling the heat from the newly launched Hyundai Venue that comes in both petrol and diesel fuel options. First previewed at Auto Expo 2016, Maruti Vitara Brezza launched in the country in the same year and has been a hit, garnering good numbers every month.

However, it has been witnessing a slump in demand due to slowdown and launch of new petrol-powered models in the segment. The petrol-powered Vitara Brezza, as reported, is expected to get a K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine, this unit will abide by the upcoming BS6 norms. This unit currently powers Ertiga and will also be seen in the XL6.

In terms of output, it makes 105hp against 138Nm torque, additionally, it benefits from Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid system comprising a dual-battery set-up and an integrated starter generator. This set-up enables offering better fuel economy. With the new 1.5L petrol unit joining Brezza line-up, the prices are likely to go up, as the sub-four-meter SUV will no longer be eligible for low excise duty levied on sub-compact vehicles powered by engines under 1200 cc capacity.

It will receive a 5-speed manual transmission at launch, followed by a 4-speed automatic unit that is available with the Ciaz 1.5L petrol, later. While Brezza will receive the new diesel engine, it is not certain if it will undergo aesthetic changes as well. The current 1.3-litre diesel engine will be discontinued, following Maruti’s decision to cease sales of diesel models ahead of the BS6 enforcement in the country from April 1, 2020.
