India's biggest car maker Maruti Suzuki is toying with the idea of manufacturing an unspecified number of 'Swift Range Extender', a hybrid avtaar of the Swift hatchback. Showcased at the recently concluded Delhi Auto Expo, the car is basically a plug-in hybrid version of the popular hatchback.
The cars will be supplied during the financial year 2014-15, after the upcoming elections, as a part of the company’s pilot project. The source has also informed that though the Swift range Extender will be manufactured in India, some components such as the battery and electric motor will be imported from Japan and other countries.
Quoting an anonymous source, an Autocar Professional report said, “While the homologation process of the hybrid Swift is nearly completed, the team is expecting ARAI certification anytime now.” The source also added that more details on the project would be revealed by the first quarter of the 2015 financial year.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift Range Extender is powered by a three-cylinder inline 658cc engine, different from the regular Swift hatchback. Aiding this engine is a 74 hp electric motor mounted on the front axle. The battery powering the motor is a 5 kWh lithium-ion unit that can be charged fully in 90 minutes. Claimed mileage for the plug-in hybrid Swift is great 48.2 km/l in a combined cycle. The car can also cover a Distance of 25.5 km on electric power alone.
