Maruti Suzuki India that already has an entry level MPV in the form of Ertiga is now working on a a full fledged MUV to rival the segment topper Toyota Innova. Codenamed as RX, the production ready version of the vehicle will be ready by 2017, and will be positioned above the Ertiga.

Toyota Innova that currently enjoys the numero uno position in the UV segment, inspected a dip in its sales when Maruti brought in the Ertiga. However, the Innova recovered rapidly, Maruti Suzuki showed its dominance in the market. And if the company succeeds in developing a really good product and price it spot-on, this could be a troublesome situation for others.

According to a report published on the Livemint, Maruti Suzuki's management has already given an approval to develop an eight-seater utility vehicle with a high-capacity diesel engine. This diesel engine is currently being developed by Suzuki Motor Corporations's engineers in Japan. The said engine will be ready by next year.

The report further claims that Maruti Suzuki India has internally issued a note saying that C.V. Raman, who was earlier serving as executive officer-engineering will hold the 'additional responsibility of chief engineer of the new Model RX'. This makes us believe that the company has already started working on the MUV. The same has also been confirmed by three component suppliers to Maruti and an industry executive that the RX is a multi-utility vehicle. However, they said that the company is yet to discuss the particulars of the model with suppliers.

Now when all the manufactures including Honda, Hyundai and Ford are tyring to challenge MSI, the company too is busy developing some really good cars to retain its peak position. Against Honda and Hyundai's proposed compact SUVs, MSI is all set to launch the much anticipated XA Alpha, which is likely to be showcased at the upcoming 2014 Indian Auto Expo.

Stay tuned to Autoportal India for more updates on the same. Cheers!
