Maruti Suzuki is working on a premium version of its tallboy hatchback Wagon R, which is expected to launch soon in the Indian market. Being named as XL5, on the lines of Ertiga's premium version XL6, it was recently spotted again as a test mule with heavy camouflage on the roads. It is expected to be retailed through the company's NEXA premium outlets across the nation.
Going by the spy-shots, the spied mule of Maruti Suzuki XL5 was riding on black-painted multi-spoke alloy wheels however it is not certain whether the model will carry the same set of wheels when it goes on sale. The front fascia will flaunt distinctive styling with multi-tier lighting arrangement, tweaked front grille, and a redesigned bumper.
It will also boast of a new set of projector headlamps with DRLs. The ground clearance will be higher than the Wagon R, some unconfirmed reports pegging it at 180mm. The rear end will get an LED tail-lamp cluster and a high-mounted LED stop lamp.
The cabin is expected to feature an all-black upholstery, identical to what we have seen in Maruti XL6. It might get a few extra features over the Wagon R to make it appear like a more premium offering.
Mechanically, Maruti XL5 will be available only with a 1.2L petrol engine, in all likelihood, in a BS 6 certified mode. However, the Wagon R is offered with a 1.0L petrol engine as well, besides the 1.2L motor. The XL5 can be availed with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.
Maruti well might also consider the introduction of mild-hybrid SHVS technology which debuted with Ciaz sedan.
