Maruti Suzuki Swift has completed 10 years in India this month as it was firstly launched in the country in May 2005. The hatch has emerged to be a bestseller for the company with over 1.3 million units sold in India, till date. The Company has lined up month long celebrations to engage with Swift owners and enthusiasts to mark the occasion. Just so you know, Swift's journey started way back in 2002 at the Paris Motor Show, when Rally inspired Concept S was showcased reflecting influences from two and four wheel racing activities.
On the occasion, Mr RS Kalsi Executive Director (M&S) shared, “Over 1.3 million Swift cars have been bought in India so far, transforming the landscape of the Indian auto industry and inspiring new products, market segments and categories. Over the years, the Swift has evolved in features, looks and technology, often defining the changes in aspiration and preferences of Indian car customers.” Swift has swept Car of the Year Awards in India, twice over, once when it was launched (2005) and again when the full model change was introduced (2011). In its latest avatar, Swift Diesel saw a 10 per cent increase in fuel efficiency while Swift Petrol improved by 9.5 per cent, making Swift the most fuel efficient car in its category.
As told before, it was at 2002 Paris Motor Show from where the idea of Swift developed. In 2003, Suzuki unveiled the Concept S2, an open-top sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Then, at 2004 Paris Motor Show, eventually, the Concept Swift was showcased, which was readied into the production-version and launched in Japan in November 2004. And, India received it around half a year later in May 2005. In 2007, Maruti launched the diesel variant of the Swift in the Indian market. Three years later in 2010, the company provided a minor facelift of the hatchback. But, August 2011 saw the full model change of Swift, as the country's largest automaker introduced an all-new Swift in the Indian market. Maruti launched the upgraded Swift in October 2014 with minor changes and upgraded mileages.
