The Vitara Brezza has, indeed, turned out to be a magnum-opus vehicle for Maruti as it has registered over 5600 bookings in just a couple of days since its launch. Now, grapevine has that the country's largest automaker is planning to introduce the sub-compact SUV with the Baleno-sourced 1.0L turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine by the festive season this year. Just to add to your knowledge, Maruti Vitara Brezza was launched in diesel fuel trim only with the company's tried and trusted 1.3L DDiS engine.
Currently, Maruti has two petrol engines which powers most of its line-up. First, the 83bhp 1.2L engine, which also does duties to the Swift hatchback and sedan sibling. Second, the heavier and more powerful 1.4L engine which is under the bonnet of Ciaz and Ertiga. But, the company is not considering both the aforementioned engines as the 1.2L motor might not provide the required power to the Vitara Brezza, while the 1.4L powertrain would increase the cost of the sub 4-meter SUV. For those asking, cars with length below 4000mm ( 4-meters) are availed tax benefits with a engine below 1200cc. Last Month, Maruti showcased the Baleno RS at the 2016 Auto Expo, which would also come loaded with the 1.0L Boosterjet engine.
The 1.0L Boosterjet petrol engine, initially, would arrive as total import as it would take sometime for the company to locally assemble them. Moreover, the combined demand for the Baleno RS and Vitara Brezza is not expected to be too high to start the local assembling of the engine. The company official, close to the development of these products, says that at least 100,000 units a month should be manufactured to start the local assembly of the Boosterjet engine. Speculations are also rife that the next-gen Swift, expected to be launched in 2017-18 and based on Baleno's new lightweight architecture, would also be powered by the 1.0L turbo engine. Just so you know, the 1.0L Boosterjet engine develops a maximum power of 110bhp at 5,500rpm and 170 Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. However, it would be quite a challenge for the company engineers to extract class-leading fuel economy from the engine since it has a turbocharger, and the mileage varies substantially in regular test cycle and real world conditions.
