The compact SUV segment seems to be quite a popular one these days and the latest to jump into the game is Mazda. The company’s new compact SUV will be based on the Demio hatchback platform and is expected to enter the Japanese market, where the SUV segment grew 7.3 per cent in last year, by the end of 2014.

While obtaining its design language from CX-5, the new model will also feature a new fuel-efficient yet powerful diesel engine. The company is planning to target the mass market with its new SUV and will position it below the CX-5. Interestingly, along with the Japanese market, the company has also given hints to introduce the model in emerging markets like Thailand and other Asian countries.

The new SUV will be Mazda's second model to be part of the company's newly-derived KODO - Soul of Motion Design language and SKYACTIV technologies. The new model will boast of a bold design with Mazda's iconic cup-shaped large grille and swept around headlamps at front.

In the past the Japanese market has never been overly fond of large SUVs due to the constraint of urban spaces, but a compact SUV seems to be just the right formula in this fast emerging segment. Mazda has been contemplating entry into the Indian market for some time, and this new SUV could just be the right vehicle for entry into a keenly fought area of the Indian automotive market.
