We’ve known for quite some time Mercedes is working on a mid-cycle refresh for its A-Class lineup, including for the range-topping A45 AMG model. The hot hatchback is no longer the most powerful model in its segment as it was dethroned late last year by the Audi RS3 Sportback which has 367 bhp whereas the A45 AMG “only” has 360 bhp. However, Mercedes is just about ready to fight back as the revised model will pack more punch.
According to the attached image which seems to be from a magazine, the facelifted A45 AMG will be offered in two states of tune: a standard variant with 381 bhp and a higher performance S model with as much as 400 bhp. This means Mercedes will once again have the most powerful model in this class, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Audi will reply with an RS3 Plus version or something similar that will surpass the output provided by the AMG four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. After all, the Audi model does come with a bigger 5-cylinder, 2.5-liter engine so there is room for even more power.
Getting back to the facelifted A45 AMG, it seems to feature a new front bumper that has revised vents and additional fins which could be made from carbon fiber. There is also a new lower front grille while the headlights seem to have slightly different graphics, although we will have to wait for an official image to see whether this is true.
The upper front grille appears to have a somewhat different pattern and this might be the 400 bhp A45 AMG S which aside from the power bump could also get larger brakes and other body upgrades. Expect some minor tweaks inside the cabin as well although nothing of great significance.
Needless to say, the A45 AMG S will be substantially quicker than the outgoing A45 AMG which runs the 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.6 seconds and tops out at an electronically-capped 250 kmph.
Mercedes will bring the facelifted A-Class range to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but an online reveal could occur sooner than that.
