The Mercedes-AMG’s new GT S is slated to be the next official safety car for the next season that begins in less than a week’s time in Melbourne. The car replaces the SLS-AMG from the Mercedes stable for the new Grand Prix season.
The SLS-AMG GT S stock sports a turbocharged 4.0L V8 engine and can generate about 500 horsepower with 650 Nm of torque.. The car can do 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, crucial in the role the cars have to play, and can hit a top speed of 310 km/h which is electronically limited. The Safety car, in addition also has a stroboscopic light bar for signaling, mounted on top, which has been specifically designed to reduce aerodynamic drag along with the rear wing.
The Safety car, which is deployed when bad weather or incidents pose a threat to the race, would be driven by Bernd Maylander, while the passenger would be able to keep in touch with race control and monitors the race via an on-board iPads.The car also has louder exhausts than stock primarily, for a little showmanship, to keep the crowds pumped up.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Estate also replaces the earlier C 63 AMG Estate as the official medical car for Formula one. The car shares the engine with the AMG C 63 S but is used in an estate format to carry medical emergency supplies including respirators and defibrillators and as well as an AMG adaptive suspension for a bump-free ride.
