Motorsports is one of the most dangerous sports anywhere across the world, be it Formula 1 or MotoGP or DTM Racing. These fast paced and highly competitive form of sports is susceptible to accidents due to any reason. Within a brisk of the moment, the situation changes and hence safety cars are deployed to control the pace of the race and also guide the racing cars through the track.
DTM is one such highly competitive touring race series in the world and they have called upon the new Mercedes-AMG GT to do the duty of the Safety car. The AMG-GT already does its duties as the safety car in the famous Formula 1 series, which replaced the Gullwing SLS AMG. The Mercedes AMG GT will make its debut at the Lausitzring speedway this weekend.
The safety car will be closely based on the road-legal model, but with obvious changes necessary for a race car. The changes will include a wind tunnel tested low-profile light bar mounted on a carbon-fiber air scoop on the roof. Also, an optional Aerodynamic package will include the front splitter and rear wing and the rolling stock.
Inside the cabin, the AMG GT gets racing buckets, six-point harness belt, flat-bottom steering wheel, and special radio equipment. Apart from these handful of changes, the safety AMG-GT is essentially the same as the road-going model. The engine is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 motor producing 510 BHP and coupled with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
The safety car which will be driven by racing driver Jurgen Kastenholz will replace the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series coupe. The car will be used in conjunction with other safety vehicles furnished by Audi and BMW and will be changed from race to race. Now, whenever a radio message is sent by race organizers, you can watch the AMG-GT tackling and controlling the DTM cars!
