On the sidelines at the launch of the Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG that got underway in the country yesterday, the German automaker confirmed that the regular CLA-Class sedan will make its commercial debut in India within the next 180 days. The news was confirmed by Eberhard Kern, managing director of Mercedes Benz India at the Buddh International Circuit in the capital.
Now usually, it is the regular model that gets introduced first and then, its performance-oriented counterpart debuts. With the CLA though, Merc has ditched the convention and decided to roll out the highly potent CLA 45 AMG into the Indian market first, while pushing the launch of the CLA-Class sedan to sometime later in the year.
The reason for the move we hear, is the fact that the CLA-Class is doing really well in the international markets, which led to a critical shortage of supply of the sedan. Therefore, while Mercedes Benz was taking stock of the situation and ramping up production of the sedan, it was decided to give the Indian market the AMG model in the meantime.
The CLA-Class is based on Merc’s highly successful MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform that also underpins the gorgeous A-Class and the B-Class. The A-Class has already received rave reviews for its handsome front grille and the same has been borrowed by the CLA coupe and also, the newly launched CLA 45 AMG. The swooping roofline has been inspired by the larger CLS-Class. The interiors of the coupe are also strikingly, similar to that of the A-Class.
Under the hood of the CLA-Class, expect to see the 1.6-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine that is rated at 120PS and 200Nm and a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that puts 110PS and 250Nm. Both engines come coupled to a 7-Speed dual-clutch gearbox that sends power to the front wheels.
In the Indian market, the Mercedes Benz CLA-Class will rival the upcoming Audi A3 sedan that is slated for its commercial debut on 7th August 2014. We expect the Merc CLA coupe to carry a sticker price of sub-Rs 30 lakh. Stay tuned to AutoPortal.com, as we bring you all the latest news and updates about the upcoming CLA-Class and the A3 sedan.
