The new compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz with GLA concept had been revealed before its official debut in the Shanghai Motor show. The car has been designed on the MFA (Mercedes Front wheel Architecture) platform which has been used in the A and B class Mercedes cars. The production version is expected to roll out at the Frankfurt motor show. The car is said to have been designed to capture youngsters rather than business class passengers.
The GLA looks more muscular when compared to other SUVs. It is sporty and more coupe like. The huge front grille has a large, round Mercedes star logo. The looks and feel of the car has been made totally new. The eye catching technology in the new GLA is its LASER projector fitted swept back head lamps. The LASER beam projector throws a light beam on the road and can show arrow marks indicating turnings. It is controlled through the dashboard COMAND system. It can also project movies, pictures or any compatible media on nearby walls. The concept vehicle features two cameras at the front of its roof rails which are removable.
The GLA would be powered by the same engine as in MFA, which is a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder turbo charged petrol engine with a power of 211 hp produced in it. A diesel engine of the same capacity is also expected. The transmission system is expected to be a seven speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). A Front wheel drive model and an All wheel drive model are expected in the market. The car is an expected competitor for Audi Q3, Range rover Evoque and BMW X1. The car will run on a 20 inches alloy wheel with five spokes covered by 255/45 R20 tyres.
The car would have a mixture of leather and dark galvanized aluminium in the interior. There would be Plexiglas control buttons for the COMAND online.
