Mercedes-Benz India has announced the launch of GLS Class on May 18, 2016 in the country. The GLS Class is touted as the S-Class of SUVs and is the flagship product in the SUV portfolio of the German luxury automaker. It had its world premiere at the 2015 Los Angeles Motor Show in November, and it is replacing the GL Class. The SUV comes with several cosmetic updates over the GL models, while mechanically it is expected to be powered by the same motor as the GL 350 d.
Measuring 5130 millimetres in length, 1934 millimetres in width and 1850 millimetres in height, Mercedes-Benz GLS comes with a wheelbase of 3075 millimetres. The front fascia is redesigned to distinguish it from the outgoing model with addition of chrome. It rides on the newly-developed light-alloy wheels. As for the rear end of the SUV, the bumper and tail-lamp cluster is restyled. Inside the cabin, there are three rows of seating which can accommodate seven passengers comfortably. The GLS gets a newly designed instrument panel with semi-integrated media display, new 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and a modified centre console with touch-pad as standard. In addition, the SUV features an ionization system for even better interior air quality as optional feature.
Mercedes has incorporated the latest generation 8-inch COMAND Online infotainment system with a colour media display as well as the intuitive touchpad. Standard Services include automatic emergency call (eCall), Accident Recovery and also breakdown assistance and after-sales service. As for the safety of the occupants, the GLS boasts of Collision prevention assist plus, Crosswind Assist, Brake Assist, Electronic all-wheel drive traction system and Attention Assist as standard features. Under the bonnet, there is the same 3.0L V6 motor which develops 255bhp and 619Nm. It is linked to a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The SUV is also available with Mercedes' Dynamic Select feature, which provides up to six transmission modes: Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Individual, Off-Road, Off-Road+.
