In a tussle to tap a lead in the high performance vehicle segment of the country, Mercedes-Benz is planning to open dedicated AMG Sports car stores in major cities of India by next year, claims ET. AMG is the company's division specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz cars.
Now when Mercedes' rivals BMW and Audi too are focusing on their performance oriented vehicles, the company wants to earn the competitive advantage by opening up dedicated stores for such vehicles. This will allow customers to buy an AMG directly from the outlets than to travel to Chakan plant for the same.
What convinced the German luxury carmaker to open its stores is the positive response the AMG range of cars has received in India. The company has sold over 200 AMG cars since its debut in 2010. Commenting on this Mercedes Benz India MD & CEO, Eberhard Kern said, "We have been successful with the AMG range and demand has been outstripping supply. We believe the segment has the potential for independent growth and could lead the performance drive in India."
Seeing the positive response for the AMG cars, the company rolled out three more AMG cars this years- E63 AMG, G63 AMG and the all new SLK 55 AMG priced at Rs 1.29 crore, Rs 1.6 crore and 1.26 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), respectively. Mumbai and Delhi are two major cities where the company will try to open its AMG outlets first, followed by Bangalore and Hyderabad.
