Mercede-Benz A-Class and Mercedes-Benz B-Class get third-gen hybrid powertrains.
Will be plug-in hybrids.
Will go on sale in India in the future.
Mercedes has announced that the A-Class, B-Class and A-Class sedan all have been added to what it calls the ‘EQ’ range. These are plug-in hybrids that have a petrol motor, an electric motor, and can be plugged in to charge the battery pack for the electric motor as well.
The fossil fuel component of these hybrids consists of a 1.3-litre four cylinder petrol engine. While it might seem almost the same as something that powers a Swift, it produces a surprising 160bhp. Then there’s the electric motor, which produces 100 bhp of its own. Combined, they propel these models from 0-100kph in 6.6 seconds. Top speed is 235kph (limited).

The Lithium-ion battery feeding the electric motor is a 15.6kWh one, and can be charged from 10-100 per cent in 105 minutes. However, you’ll require a 7.4 kW Wallbox with AC current for that. The DC battery will go from 10-80 per cent in just 25 minutes. In electric mode (no petrol engine involved) the cars can cover 70-75 km.
Bookings are open for the A250e globally, while the B250e will go on sale in another few weeks. There is no word yet on exactly when an India launch for these hybrids will happen.
