The German company, Mercedes-Benz is not resting on its laurels and is reportedly considering launching a new SUV under the Maybach and Smart brand. The SUV is expected to be based on the next generation GL-class and would most probably be rebadged GLS under new badging scheme. The Smart SUV on the other hand is expected to be based on the Smart Forfour/Renault Twingo platform.

The Smart SUV appears to be an attempt of the company to turn the brand as such it could be more profitable in the long term. Mercedes-Benz CEO admitted that they would face engineering challenges in the development process of the Smart SUV since it employs a more space-efficient configuration - rear engine/rear drive. He also added “if we were to go for any expansion for the Smart family, the SUV segment would be the one to look into.”

The marketing chief, Mercedes-Benz, Ola Kallenius said they may also extend the Maybach and Pullman models. It is likely that Mercedes may mainly focus the Maybach model in an effort to keep the brand separate from the performance-based AMG models. The engines that we may find on the Maybach cars would be - 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8  and 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12. The car may not receive a diesel engine and would be aimed at the ever expanding Chinese and American car market.
