Following the numerous spy shots, Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the GLS SUV, which is the former GL in a facelifted avatar. Described as being the “S-Class among SUVs”, the GLS moniker is a part of the new naming strategy of the German luxury car manufacturer. So it will be ideal to say that the GLS is nothing but the revised GL with design and feature changes.
The GLS SUV will get an updated front fascia with a set of new headlights incorporating the LED daytime running lights. There's a big tri-star logo of Merc and the revised double slats make the front look more dominating than ever. New alloy wheel design and slightly different graphics for the LED taillights completes the exterior changes, which are rather subtle and can go unnoticed.
It's inside the cabin that you will notice most of the changes! The seven-seater cabin, now gets a 8-inch tablet like screen for the infotainment system, replacing the integrated display in the center console. There's also an updated three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in the Nappa leather and a new touchpad. You can also get an an optional air ionization system by paying.
As far as the engines are concerned, there's an option to choose from 4 power units. The smallest capacity engine is the GLS 350d 4Matic that delivers 255 bhp and 616 Nm through a V6 turbo motor. Next in the line is the GLS 450 4Matic with a 3.0-litre V6 engine that produces 362 bhp and 500 Nm of torque.
Then there's the GS 550 4Matic which gets a power bump of 20 bhp and now produces 449 bhp and 699 Nm through a bi-turbo V8 motor. And last but not the least is the flagship GLS63 that now produces 577 bhp and 760 Nm, an extra 27 bhp. This, of course, unlike all the other variants, will not be mated with the 9-speed automatic transmission.
The SUV has received all the latest safety and assistance systems like the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE, Brake Assist BAS, cruise control, ESP and electronic AWD traction system with 4ETS. And if you are willing to shell out those extra bucks, you can get a hell lot of extra features too.
These include the optional Driver Assistance Package with DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross- Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection. Also, you can add a night vision system with the optional LED Intelligent Light System, and the MAGIC VISION CONTROL which boosts visibility thanks to the heated adaptive windscreen wiper system.
While the new GLS will be on sale from the next month in the U.S, expect it enter India somewhere around the first half of the next year.
