Mercedes-Benz India has launched the armoured S600 Guard at a jaw-dropping price of Rs. 8.9 Crores (Ex. Showroom, Delhi) in the country. Being the highly protective and armoured version of the company's flagship offering, the S-Class, it joins the stable of Merc's other two Guard vehicles - the E-Guard and M-Guard. The S600 Guard offers highest level of VR9-level ballistics protection to its occupants.
Firstly unveiled in 2012, it is being manufactured at the German luxury automaker's assembly lines. Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard comprises of protective components made of special steel in the body structure and outer shell. In addition, there are heat-resistant synthetic fibres to save the occupants from projectiles. As said before as well, the S600 Guard comes with VR9-level ballistics protection. Hence, it can withstand 7.62x51mm rifle rounds on multiple areas of the body from several angles.
There is also an automatic fire suppression system and an emergency fresh air system in the armoured vehicle to minimize the smoke ingressing. Special layer of protection is provided to windows as they have thick laminated glass with polycarbonate coating to withstand bullets. In fact, an individual is safe even if some explosives are planted beneath the car due to the underbody protection cover. The interior cabin is almost identical to the standard S-Class with all the features of the same on offer. Though, Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard can be ordered in both 4-seater and 5-seater avatar.
However, all these protections have resulted in the S-Guard being extremely heavy in weight. It weighs approx. 1.9 tonnes more than the regular S-Class. The air suspension system has re-tuned with stiffer and reinforced dampers, while the brakes are even bigger. The Michelin-run flat tyres come with a tyre pressure monitoring system. Under the hood, it has a 6.0L V12 engine which makes a massive power of 530bhp and peak torque of 830Nm. It is linked to a 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox with an electronically limited top speed of 210kmph.
