Mercedes-Benz gave a commercial successor to the SLS AMG through the recently launched AMG GT. While the car has just about started reaching dealerships worldwide and India is still waiting to get the official nod for it, Mercedes-AMG is in the process of unveiling its racecar avatar, the GT3.
On the run-up to the Geneva Motor Show, where the car will be unveiled, the carmaker had already teased the GT3 with artist sketches that previewed the large spoiler fit for the GT3 category of race cars. But the actual photograph that has been teased now reveals the real skin of the car. The front end incorporates the classic Mercedes-Benz race car grille from the 30s. It looks very much like the W154 race car that was raced back in the day by Rudolf Caracciola in the 1938 European Championship. Apart from the classic grille, the face is also bolstered with a more aggressive and aerodynamic bumper full of winglets. The wheel arches are wider too, allowing for larger racing tyres.
There is word that the AMG GT3 will spawn a road legal car as well. Expected to have a different name and not 'GT3', this more powerful version will sit over the AMG GT S in the model lineup. The race car will be revealed in all its glory at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. It will replace the successful SLS AMG GT3 racecar which has proven its mettle in the likes of the DTM championships. The AMG GT3 has some big shoes to fit into then.
