German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is under scanner of the government agencies of USA and Germany for irregularity in emission. If found guilty, Mercedes could face a large amount of monetary penalty. Also, it could be forced to recall all its affected vehicles. While there is no confirmation yet that Mercedes-Benz has used a similar emission cheating software as Volkswagen, investigators in USA have found irregularity in emission from the diesel powered models of the brand.
The Mercedes-Benz diesel powered cars tested in USA by investigators, passed the emission tests without any trouble. But in one instance, the emission control systems were switched off after running 26 kilometres that created suspicion among the investigators. The investigators are currently checking if there is any cheating software that controlled the emission clean system to regulate emission based on speed or acceleration.
This is not the first time Mercedes-Benz cars have been accused of being equipped with emission cheating software. Previously in 2016 a lawsuit was filed against the German brand claiming that its ‘Clean Diesel’ models emit alarmingly high level of nitrogen oxide (NOx) compared to the permitted level. The lawsuit also claimed that the ‘Clean Diesel’ models of Mercedes-Benz emit higher NOx in real world compared to the lab test conditions.
In recent past, Volkswagen and its subsidiary brands were found using an emission cheating software in the diesel powered cars to hide the real emission data. The diesel models were found emitting 40 times higher level of pollutants compared to the permitted level. Due to this scam, Volkswagen AG faced several lawsuits from all across the world. Also, the company was forced to recall and fix the affected vehicles and compensate the affected owners as well.
