The wait is almost over as Mercedes-Benz has commenced the teasing game for its upcoming S-Class Cabriolet which they say it will represent the first flagship four-seater luxury cabrio of the company since 1971. It’s also the sixth member of the ever growing S-Class family and will be officially introduced in about a month from now at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but an online reveal should occur sooner than that.
Codenamed A217, the S-Class Cabrio is being previewed in the attached official teaser showing as expected an elegant design that has nicely made the transition from the coupe’s fixed top configuration. Instead of a metal roof, the cabriolet will employ an electrically retractable fabric roof featuring a multi-layer construction and a big rear window made from glass, but as with most cabriolets, rear visibility will be quite limited.
The body of the car closely echoes the coupe, with the exception of the rear end that had to be redesigned as the trunk must now accommodate the soft top when it’s folded down. This change has obviously had an impact on the cargo capacity but this really isn’t very important to those who are in the market for a high-end four-seater cabriolet with the three-pointed star.
Unsurprisingly, the engine lineup will be largely carried over from the coupe and shortly after the standard model will be introduced we shall see the range-topping S63 and S65 AMG models, likely early next year. Rear-wheel drive will be standard across the range, but select versions will be available at an additional cost with the familiar 4MATIC all-wheel drive arrangement.
Needless to say, the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will be significantly more expensive than the equivalent coupe once it will go on sale in Europe by the end of this year. It’s not known at this point whether Mercedes-Benz India plans on bringing the model in our country.
