German car maker Mercedes-Benz is all set to bring the AMG version of its GL-Class in the Indian market. Launching tomorrow, GL 63 AMG will join Mercedes’ high-performance AMG India line-up that includes the C 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG, SLK 55 AMG and SLS AMG.
The Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG is the performance oriented version of the standard GL-Class SUV. The AMG badged seven-seater vehicle stands tall on 21-inch delicious alloy wheels and, the AMG quad-tailpipes get chrome accents.
The GL 63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 churning out 564 ps, that’s too in the E 63 AMG in current state of tune. The high torque output of 760 Nm propels the GL 63 AMG from 0-100 kmph in 4.9 seconds and can reach a electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. For a vehicle with a kerb weight of over 2.5 tonnes, that’s some blisteringly quick time. The SUV sends drive to all four wheels via the speedshift 7G-tronic gearbox.
The SUV offers three driving modes– comfort, sport and manual. In comfort mode, the start-stop system stays active, gear changes happen early and starts take place in second gear. In sports and manual mode, stop-start is deactivated and shift times get shorter. The transfer case for the 4Matic all-wheel drive system distributes power in 40:60 ratio to the front and rear axles respectively. Another highlight is the air suspension that comes with an ‘AMG ride control’ package of adaptive, self-leveling features and active anti roll-bars.
Though the current GL 350 CDI is assembled in India, the GL 63 AMG will come to India via the CBU route. It will go up against the likes of Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Range Rover.
