Mercedes has just launched the AMG version of its GL SUV at a price of Rs 1.66 Crore (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The GL 63 yet another AMG product to be introduced in India after the C63, G63, E63, SLS and the SLK55 in line with Merc's commitment to launch its entire AMG range here.
Powering the over 2.5 tonne SUV, is a 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine that puts out 548bhp of max power and a colossal 760Nm of peak torque. This unit sends power to the permanent four wheel drive system, which is biased 40/60 between the front and rear wheels. The engine is mated to a 7G-Tronic AMG automatic gearbox. Zero to 100kmph is reached in mere 4.6 seconds with a restricted top speed of 250kmph.
On the outside, the GL63 AMG has borrowed a number of styling cues from the GL-Class SUV. The differentiating factor between the two being the AMG-inspired quad tail-pipes and chrome glutted accents.
On the inside, the seven seater GL63 AMG boasts of the trademark AMG steering wheel, new leather-wrapped steering wheel and oodles of chrome garnish. Feature-wise, this hard-core SUV has been equipped with a new standard safety tech called Active Curve Control, which lets the driver negotiate out of corners effectively, while keeping the massive vehicle stable and grounded. Suspension comes via an 'AMG ride control' package which consists of adaptive, self-leveling air suspension and active anti-roll bars.
The Mercedes Benz GL63 AMG will be brought into the country via the CBU route - at least in the initial phase and will compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Range Rover in the Indian market.
