Word on the street says Tata Motors has hired none other than Lionel Messi to be the brand ambassador for the highly anticipated Kite hatchback and sedan. An official announcement is expected to occur in the coming weeks to coincide with the model’s introduction as a hatchback, with the sedan to come out in the first half of 2016.
This is obviously a smart move coming from Tata Motors as in most cases big celebrities have a positive impact on the sales of a product they are representing. It should be the same story with the Kite hatchback and sedan which are both set to employ a new design language that should lure in more buyers to dealerships compared to the Vista-based Bolt and Zest which have both been criticized for their familiar look and this has greatly affected sales of the models.
It’s not just the exterior that will be significantly different than recent Tata products, but also the interior cabin is set for a makeover to make it a more upscale product worthy of the Lionel Messi marketing connection. Expect the hatchback to hit the assembly line at the Sanand plant in Gujarat this December, so deliveries should begin early next year while the sedan will join the party shortly thereafter for those in need of a bigger trunk.
Both will share a 3-cylinder, 1.2-liter gasoline engine and a more economical 3-cylinder 1.05-liter diesel engine linked to a manual gearbox while an optional F-Tronic automated manual transmission could be on the agenda as well at an additional cost.
It is believed Tata Motors shipped several months ago some pre-production units of the Kite hatchback to Spain for shooting promotional campaigns, so an official reveal should be right around the corner. With Messi acting as brand ambassador, Tata wants to grab the attention of young customers but it remains to be seen whether this will have a positive impact on the model’s sales.
