MG Motor is all set to spearhead into the Indian market with its first product, Hector, slated to roll out during the second quarter of the current calendar year. The second model to join Hector will be the EZS electric SUV, which is expected to arrive during the festive season this year. Reports in media indicate the upcoming EZS SUV will be available for sale in select cities in the country. Officials at MG have confirmed launching the all-electric SUV in India during the fourth quarter of 2019 in select cities.
Electric vehicles, as we all know, are yet to gain popularity in India and most importantly, there is still need for a proper infrastructure for charging, which is one of the primary reasons behind offering all-electric EZS in select cities. Secondly, EVs cost much higher than the conventional petrol-diesel powered vehicles, which is why the sale of EVs is nowhere near the fuel-powered models.
Pertaining to lack of charging infrastructure and the high cost of purchase, carmakers are expected to restrict sales of EVs to less than 20 cities initially. One of the early players in the segment, Tata Motors, offers electrified Tigor at rent in select cities. Mahindra, on the other hand, sells its EVs in select Indian cities. It is expected that Hyundai will sell the Kona EV in just 15 cities initially.
MG EZS was previewed at the 2018 Guangzhou Auto Show in November last year. The all-electric SUV gets a 45.6 kWh battery pack that can be fully charged within 6 hours through an AC charger, whereas the model can be charged up to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes using a DC charger. In terms of power, the electric motor powering MG EZS puts out 110 kW (150 PS) along with 350 Nm torque. The no emissions SUV is claimed to offers 335 km of range on a full charge (rating vary for different markets). As for the Indian market, it is expected to run up to 250 km. The MG EZS will be launched in India a completely built unit (CBU) with prices likely to start from Rs 25 lakh.
